Bayer promotes its Aspirin tablets with the Bayer Cross, claiming fast relief for headaches colds neuralgia toothache earache rheumatism lumbago neuritis and more. It urges buying only Bayer packages with proper directions and notes cheap tins of 12 tablets and larger bottles sold by druggists.
An early 20th century health note claims headaches stem from self poisoning by liver and bowel toxins. A daily hot water drink with limestone phosphate flushes out these toxins, cleansing the alimentary canal and preventing headaches. It recommends a quarter pound from the pharmacist and notes quick results for those who continue the rinsing regimen.
Walker D. Hines, director general of railroads, says the system now moves more cars in service than any year in history. He cites a 52,456 car rise in serviceable cars between August 16 and October 4, with 12,110 added in the week ending October 4, and notes war time restraints and coal supply changes have reduced efficiency. He warns of ongoing shortage of transportation capacity despite heavy autumn business. A Chicago meeting will address coal and grain transport needs.
Oct. 14 Lecompton Kansas News reports Snowball Long a known character was sent back to the state penitentiary after an elderberry drink epidemic began locally. Officers said the homemade wine from elderberries caused frequent drunkenness and two road crew members were found dead drunk in his yard leading to his imprisonment. The confiscated stock reflects communal unrest over the incident.
In Brisbane a large public meeting passed resolutions to back the Irish determin ation for self-government. The group intends to raise a fund to aid the movement and send copies of the resolution to the Irish Australian and American press, and to Presidents Wilson and De Valera.
