Final Act in Senate Redistricting Drama

The General Assembly opens a new redistricting push in a special session with a consensus bill from the Sanford administration proposing 37 Senate districts. The plan reverses numbering, creates 24 one senator, 12 two senator, and one three senator districts and realigns counties across the state. A January referendum on a constitutional amendment remains possible if lawmakers approve, else it would wait until November 1964. a separate bond issue for a $100 million state school measure may be timed for late winter or spring.

Mistrial Declared In Self Slaying Case

CHARLOTTE AP The self murder trial of 22 year old Mrs LilIian Dean Watts Self ended in a hung jury in Gaston County. Judge Hugh Campbell declared a mistrial after jurors reported it hopelessly deadlocked at 11 for acquittal and one for manslaughter. Bond set at 12000. she jailed pending bond raise. Family present during long deliberations.

Goldwater rejects Rockefeller debate challenge in Oregon

Senator Barry Goldwater refused to debate the Republican party platforms with Governor Nelson Rockefeller, saying he would only discuss party principles rather than Kennedy administration policies. Rockefeller urged intra party debates on specific programs and vital issues before the American people.

Strangled son of Curtis Publishing exec found dead

James F. Robinson 23, son of former Curtis Publishing vice president, was found dead in his Swarthmore home. Autopsy cited strangulation by a web belt and bedpost, with restraints including chains and tape. No signs of struggle. watch and $142 recovered. no official comment.
