High Point Urban Renewal Plan Approved by URA

The Urban Renewal Administration in Washington approved High Point East Central’s 520 acre project with an eight million dollar direct investment. The plan includes railroad track coverage and sets the stage for financing and contracts between the City Council and the Redevelopment Commission. Title searches will begin next week as two appraisals determine fair value and property owners retain court recourse if needed.

New Hope Dam Dropped From Water Projects Bill

The Cape Fear River New Hope dam in North Carolina was among six major projects cut from the omnibus water projects authorization bill. The House approved a $2.4 billion compromise bill, now sent to the Senate, with included items and removal of the $78.7 million Trotters Shoals dam. Rescue by Soviets Unwelcome Call for Cuban Refugees

The Soviet tanker Druzhva aided three Cuban exiles in a leaky sailboat by broadcasting a distress call and lowering a motorboat. The refugees, found 25 miles off Miami, jumped from the rescue craft and were retrieved by a USS Coast Guard helicopter piloted by Lt. Cmdr. W. C. Wallace. They had seawater and no food aboard.
