World War II triple ace George Welch died testing a jet above the Mojave Desert after ejecting from the aircraft. Officials cited possible sonic boom caused damage but Welch survived the initial crash and was airlifted to Edwards Air Force Base with fatal injuries. He is survived by his wife Jeanette and two sons, Giles and Jolyn.
