Undercover agents and raiders backed by J. L. Osteen press a statewide liquor crackdown begun last night. In 24 hours 114 violators were arrested or slated for action as teams sweep counties including Yadkin where reports were sparse but arrests expected from prior information.
Two autos carried masked robbers into Lizton Indiana at 1 45 to 3 15 a m. They wrecked the State Bank with nitro glycerine blasts, fired on streets, and fled with more than 4000 dollars in cash and negotiable securities. Bank president Marion Bailey, 72, engaged a robber in front of the bank and residents were awakened as shots and shells scattered through the business district. The crime timed with a freight train passage and ended as the bandits escaped.
The bandits blew through heavy doors and a rear partition after entering the bank. They removed hammers crowbars and tarpaulins from Big Four sheds and accessed the bank via a back window. Telecommunication lines were cut as investigators arrived from Hendricks sheriff Louis Ponfids and Vernon Shields of the state crime bureau. Fred Ries testified in Al Capone tax evasion case that the Capone owned gambling house earned 150000 dollars in 1927.
