Flood waters rise in Kinston evacuations near 6 a.m.

Civil Defense reported 400 to 500 people evacuated from Kinston as flood waters rose to about 22.7 feet. More than 100 houses flooded with 575 buildings surrounded by water. Officials warned the river could crest tonight or Tuesday with a multi day lingering flood.

Leopard mauls teen and is shot by officers at scene

In Winston-Salem a 14 year old, John Edwin Sealey, was mauled by a leopard that had escaped from a cage behind a tourist court where owner E L Honeywell of Fort Worth, Texas was staying. Four police fired, killing the animal after it mauled the boy who later said his only regret was it happened on his first paper route. The leopard had been performing at a local fair and was valued at $3,000.

Soviet three man spaceship orbits Earth in historic milestone

The Soviet Union launched the Voskhod Sunrise with Col. Vladimir Komarov, scientist Konstantin Feoktistov, and Dr. Boris Yegorov aboard, becoming the first craft to orbit with three men. Mississippi Governor predicts Goldwater defeat in the South

Governor Johnson says Goldwater has lost ground in Mississippi and other Southern states, estimating his margin dropped from 90 to 10 percent after San Francisco to about 60 to 40. He cites GOP fundraising and states rights issues as factors and notes some leaders would back Goldwater if allowed. The note ends with a football score from a Texas game: Texas 28, opponent 7.
