North Carolina leads Georgia Tech 18-7 at halftime after Magner and Branch touchdowns and a 45 yard run. Tech opened scoring but the Tar Heels’ backs mounted a three touchdown burst before intermission.
Justice William Hitz recessed the Albert B. Fall bribery trial after doctors diagnosed bronchial pneumonia. The court will decide to declare a mistrial or resume Monday. Defense sought a recess for Fall to seek vindication while government pressed for a mistrial.
MARION, Oct 11. Judge W F Harding freed Sheriff O F Adkins and deputy Allie Steppe after investigating the Marion Manufacturing riot of Oct 2 in which six lives were lost. Nine deputies were kept in custody for admitting shooting and seven officers remained under opinion. Twiggs testified he fired at a man shooting at him, recounting seven mill bullet marks observed, while Stockton, Greensboro News editor, described the mill aftermath. Twiggs and twelve others, including Adkins, face murder warrants from strikers. 50-60 strikers waived hearings on rebellion and resisting an officer charges.

The 116th annual synod of North Carolina adjourned in Rocky Mount after three days with decisions to study ending Davidson college military training and to form a committee for a new Davidson campus church. The 1930 gathering schedules for October and delegates disperse.
A blustery east wind churned Lake Michigan into 16-foot waves driving a 590-mile front centered on Chicago. Shipping peril, breakwater weakness, and shore-drive erosion followed as waves washed over curbs. Four Waukegan fishermen were rescued after hours at sea. lighthouse keeper escaped by clinging to pier posts.
Fayetteville report details J. M. Wallace discovering Willie West, about 60, missing his left arm on a rural highway. West, a cotton mill worker, was found by officers with a bay rum bottle in his pocket and said to be drunk. Wallace claimed he straddled the body as he passed. West remained in hospital while authorities investigated.

Dense fog prevented refueling ending the attempt to beat the 421 hour St. Louis Robin record, with earlier July flights short and August flight lasting 291 hours before magneto trouble forced an earlier descent.
WADESBORO N C Oct 11 Joe Wall 27 of Lilesville was fatally injured when caught in machinery in a Pee Dee cotton gin. He was pulled into the main drive pulley after becoming entangled in a belt and died en route to a hospital as two companions, both negroes, tried to free him.
Washington October 11 Andrew McCampbell prohibition administrator at Buffalo was appointed chief of the special agents with headquarters in Washington by Commissioner Doran.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and his wife Ann Morrow completed a 9000 mile aerial survey across 29 countries in the West Indies and the Americas. They landed in Miami and planned to depart for New York to resume aviation work with Carnegie Institution supervision.
In Charlotte on October 11, Judge M V Barnhill halted attempts to inject alleged communist teachings into the murder trial of seven men over O F Aderholt. The judge ruled that questions about social equality teachings involving whites and blacks could not be asked, during cross examination of Dewey Martin, a National Textile Workers Union organizer testifying for the defense.
Entrants in the national air tour began leaving Greenville's airport this morning en route to Augusta after a brief delay. Earl Rowland flew a Cessna monoplane with Joe Meehan piloting. Rowland fell ill and could not continue. Curtiss Condor and Cessna arrived from Richmond earlier and then proceeded toward Greenville.
In the end half Clemson trails 19 to 98 with Wofford at 0 and Erskine at 12 in the first period.
Four Dunmore men, all Pennsylvan ia Coal Co. employees at No 6 colliery, were killed when their car collided with a locomotive at the Main street grade crossing in Dupont. The victims were Frank Geraci 59 and his son Christopher 19 Chas Congellori 59 and his son Michael 21. The car driven by Frank Geraci’s son was racing to reach work on time when the accident occurred.
Henderson October 11 Roy Bragg of Henderson was instantly killed when the automobile he rode in was struck on the Henderson Oxford road. C C Chance with Bragg was badly cut and bruised while three men in the other car R R Rider C C Carter of High Point and E J Earnhardt of Thomasville were bruised and cut. A coroner's jury found the wreck could not have been avoided by Rider. All injured were treated and discharged at a Henderson hospital.
Government officials and others search for Lieut. Charles Musel U S N disbursing officer who vanished from Charleston on September 28 with 59 900 in funds. A man matching his description reportedly chartered a plane from Atlanta to Tampa, carried a large sum and paid with a 1000 bill, then checked out of a hotel. Investigators extended the hunt to harbor vessels with no new clues by early today.
Raleigh October 11 The state highway commission said three state highways remained closed by floods with a detour available on one No 48 closed at Weldon No 40 closed at Roanoke Rapids and No 10 closed near Kinston toward New Bern with a Pollocksville detour.
Mrs. Sarah Powers, 71, rooming house owner in Macon, Ga, found guilty as an accessory before the fact in the slaying of James Parks, a young Atlanta printer. The verdict carries the death sentence. prosecutors said she plotted the murder after luring Parks to her home with an ad and sought $14,900 from a $7,000 life policy. Earl Manchester, 19, Rochester Mich, already convicted as the slayer, testified and pleaded for mercy.
Springfield police used a riot squad at the Illinois Mine Workers headquarters to stop provisional officers named by International President Lewis from taking possession by force. Assistant Chief Counsel Londrigan said the Illinois executive board was in legal session while Lewis appointed officers pressed to enter. Harry Fishwick and his board met to seek a temporary injunction as the international group demanded admission.
In New York for a peace mission completed J Ramsay MacDonald the British prime minister faces a full day of luncheons teas and dinners. He plans to spend tomorrow his 63rd birthday with friends then head to Canada via Niagara Falls for talks with Mackenzie King. He meets socialist leaders a Jewish Agency deputation and speaks to the English Speaking union Foreign Policy association and the Council on Foreign Relations with events broadcast across North America.
