North Carolina’s two national committeemen favor Richard Nixon for the presidential nomination if the GOP convention were held tomorrow. J E Broyhill of Lenoir and Mrs Louis Rogers of Charlotte say Nixon would win North Carolina Republicans and likely defeat President Johnson. State GOP Chairman James Holshouser of Boone backs Nixon for NC support but not a sure nationwide edge over other candidates. He names Rockefeller and Reagan as potential stronger nationwide contenders.
An armed forces communique confirms Ernesto Che Guevara and six guerrillas were killed near Higueras in southeast Bolivia. Three of the dead were Cubans, one Bolivian, two unidentified. Castro aide Fidel Castro’s former top aide’s body was reportedly being transported to Vallegrande for viewing.
Soviet Finance Minister Vasiliy Garbuzov announced a 2.2 billion ruble increase, about 15 percent, bringing the 1968 defense budget to 16.7 billion rubles or roughly $18.56 billion. Western analysts suspect undisclosed military spending raises total defense outlays beyond the published figure.
American Navy Intruder jets struck and set ablaze a sprawling base near Haiphong used for Russian missile and helicopter assembly. The attack followed a previous predawn strike with flames and secondary explosions lighting the night sky.
