Raleigh Oct 10 Gordon Gray declared Communists are not welcome at any branch of the Greater University of North Carolina in his inauguration address as president. He urged academic freedom while condemning disloyalty and said the three campuses Chapel Hill North Carolina State Greensboroshall not be used as workshops for those opposed to American culture. He urged the president to engage in politics to further education and praised consolidation as a basis for the best higher education. He stressed leadership, military strength, diplomacy, and sound economic statesmanship, noting the three institutions can become preeminent in their fields. He paid tribute to Senator Frank P. Graham and William D. Carmichael Jr.
