North Carolina Cotton Crop Forecast For 1956
The NC Crop Reporting Service forecasts a 1956 cotton crop of 365000 bales, up 14000 from last year but 92000 below the 10 year average. Yield per acre is pegged at 389 pounds, up from 350 last year and above the 10 year average of 321. Conditions in September were near ideal for picking aside from hurricane Flossy related rains and winds that damaged some areas. Coastal plain yields exceed Piedmont due to dry weather and boll weevils in the latter region.

Raleigh NC State Treasurer Edwin Gill said recommendations may go to the Legislature on laws governing deposit of state cash reserves. He cited an interpretation by the attorney general that state funds must be placed where they earn the going rate. The state is shifting about 71 million dollars from state banks to short term federal securities while FDIC and Fed oppose higher bank rates. Gill keeps an open mind on law changes and may propose actions to maximize returns.

He urges a wait and see stance and criticizes conditions tying action on imports to state rights. He argues the proposal mirrors a federal pressure tactic and would flood the market in 1957 if enacted.
