Rescue workers labor to recover bodies from the Harrow wreck as Scotland Yard revises totals. 90 dead, 94 injured hospitalized, 63 treated and released. Over 1,000 people involved, including Americans Donald G. Woodall and wife Jean Woodall.
In Greensboro, state witnesses testified in the trial of F. D. Smith charged with hit and run driving and man slaughter. The state plans 20 or more witnesses. Smith allegedly drove the car that struck 13 year old George Rainey of Pomona July 16 and fled. Solicitor Charles Hagan presented photographs diagrams and highway descriptions. Seven witnesses testified yesterday with speeds of 75 to 80 mph cited for the striking car.
The United States weighs steps against the Soviet Union after Moscow demanded Ambassador Kennan’s recall. State Department officials say retaliation is under study while warning that severing diplomatic ties would be an extreme action with global consequences.
Public Health Service reports indicate the polio outbreak is subsiding with 3,227 new cases last week, bringing total to 42,372 through Oct 4, above the 1949 record year. Data suggest 1949 remained the prior high, while 1916 marked the worst on record.
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson declared that Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower has surrendered GOP leadership to Sen. Robert Taft, while praising President Truman as a man of independence who rallied free peoples against communism. Stevenson, on a Missouri tour, defended Truman’s record and framed it as a strong foreign policy endorsement against Eisenhower.
The Agriculture Department forecast higher prices for dairy products in 1953 and expected more Americans to switch from butter to margarine. Poultry prices were seen rising slightly, with egg and turkey prices edging up to offset a moderate drop in chicken prices. Butter consumption was predicted to fall to a new low, while margarine use rises due to a wide price gap.
Surgeons at Georgetown University medical center performed the first human implantation of an artificial heart valve three weeks ago. Dr. Charles Hufnagle and Dr. John F. Gillespie led the operation that saved a 30 year old housewife from death caused by rheumatic valve damage. The National Bureau of Standards produced the chambered plastic valve, which integrates with the aorta to prevent backflow with each heartbeat.
New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey labeled Adlai Stevenson and Senator John J. Sparkman as promoting white supremacy in Alabama ballots from 1948 and 1952. He accused them of hypocrisy for advocating minority rights while supporting a party ticket tied to disfranchisement, calling Sparkman chosen by Truman and Stevenson a two headed monster.
President Truman accused Dwight Eisenhower and the GOP of vows to end price controls and warned they would slash taxes and budgets. He called Ike “Old Flim-Flam” and contrasted Stevenson’s fiscal restraint with Eisenhower’s alleged promises, while noting waste-cutting claims IRS.

South Korean infantry seized White Horse Hill at 12 30 am after a brutal hand to hand clash against Chinese forces. Allied tanks and air power pounded the region as fighting raged along the Chorwon and Mundung valleys with heavy casualties reported on both sides.
Vaughn Cannon, imprisoned in Atlanta for income tax evasion, will be released November 5 after serving just under one year of a two year sentence. Two friends sponsored his release and arranged employment. Cannon was sentenced in Greensboro on November 12, 1951, by Judge Johnson J. Hayes and was charged with owing about 1.45 million in additional taxes for 1942 to 1947.
Lou Garren faces second degree murder or manslaughter charges after his wife was shot twice at their Haywood Road home on July 2. The grand jury returned an indictment Monday accusing Garren of murder.
Edward B. Phillips twenty six of 218 Broad Street Winston Salem escaped from a Caldwell prison camp work gang near Lenoir yesterday. He used a taxi in his flight and police issued an alert.
The State Board of Elections opened an investigation into the theft of about 350 Polk County primary ballots reported by Ned Anderson chair of the County Board of Elections. Testimony at the hearing said the ballots were later found in various locations across the county.
About 500 members attend the three day Asheville gathering. Speakers include Sen Clyde Hoey Dr E G McCarran UNC School of Public Health Dean Reginald Atwater of the American Health Association and D Hiden Ramsey Asheville vice chairman State Board of Education.
Dwight D. Eisenhower accused the Truman administration of causing the Korean War in a San Francisco speech to about 29 000 at the Cow Palace. He argued the 1951 State Department decision left Korea outside a defense perimeter and that the Soviet trap was perfectly conceived. He announced future stops in Fresno San Diego Long Beach and Los Angeles while denouncing foreign policy as a “bear pit.”
The State Utilities Commission continued its review of Southern Railway's bid to discontinue trains 11 and 112 between Greensboro and Goldsboro. Commissioners questioned witnesses on calculations and reasoning showing the line loses money, as the hearing moved into a third day.
