Meredith Desegregation Clash at Ole Miss Ends With Registration
In 1962 Mississippi faced a federal showdown as Gov Robert Bar nett defied orders to block James Meredith from enrolling at Ole Miss. Federal troops and National Guard moved in after riots, tear gas and gunfire. Meredith was registered and campus chaos subsided. The episode highlighted interposi tion and escalation as federal authority asserted desegregation amid deadly violence.
