City Council Rejects Deferment Appeals for Fire Police Cited
City council on Wednesday frowned on any action to draft deferments for city police or firemen. Assistant Fire Chief C S Canady was discussed after Fire Chief E K Ingram sought deferments for Canady Lieutenant W A Metcalf and Private T G Womack. The local board denied the request and the appeals board upheld that decision. Further appeal would go to the President. Council doubted effectiveness and questioned political expediency, noting losses of indispensable personnel. A recent National Selective Service directive on exemptions for key municipal fire and sanitary staff was discussed but council did not commit to Canady being irreplaceable.
