Spurgeon Bradley testifies in W F Harding inquiry into the Marion Manufacturing riot recounting that he saw seven deputies fire on picketing strikers. The incident left five men dead and is under investigation by authorities in Marion Ohio.
In Marion five workers died in a plant riot last Wednesday. Judge W F Harding leads a special investigation after a Raleigh conference with Governor Gardner and labor leaders. A mass meeting of strikers is planned as the case continues with hearings and witness testimony underway.
Carl Williams Oklahoma cotton representative on the federal farm board said he did not intend to imply that a fair price for cotton would be a cent to a cent and a quarter higher than the then current price in his senate agriculture committee testimony last week.
Senator Sheppard of Texas introduced a bill to amend the Volstead act to make the purchaser of intoxicating liquor for beverage purposes equally punishable with the manufacturer or seller. He cited a court decision that had held purchasers not liable in transporting cases.
A five member subcommittee led by Senator Carraway was named to investigate lobbying. Members include Senators Walsh Borah Robinson Blaine and one more. four Democrats and one Republican independent group oppose the tariff bill. The inquiry will focus on lobbying tied to the tariff measure and may involve the Senate Finance Committee.
A crumpled wing at 1500 feet yesterday caused a fatal plane crash near Leno Texas. Lieut. Jack Brooks a Dallas contractor and three passengers Leon Lynch Allen Powell and Marian Botter were killed. Brooks was regarded as an ace pilot with over 5000 hours in the air. The left wing apparently braced failed and folded over the cockpit.
Four Russian aviators traveling from Moscow to New York set up a temporary machine shop at Water Fall on Dall Island to repair their plane Land of the Soviets which landed Thursday en route from Sitka to Seattle A new motor is en route from Seattle and could reach Waterfall late today or tomorrow, allowing them to continue toward Seattle by Wednesday.
In Nacogdoches Texas a deputy sheriff Claude King and federal prohibition officer L Chance were killed in a gun duel after tensions over bootlegging accusations. Sheriff Eugene Turner intervened briefly. King died after three bullet wounds and an ambulance transfer. Chance had previously served as a deputy sheriff before his federal appointment.

An explosion on the cargo carrier Belbeck at Snyder avenue wharf Delaware river killed three men and injured several more during repairs in the hold. The ship owned by the U S Shipping Board and managed by Charles A Devlin Inc arrived Sept 24 from Santos Brazil.

They flew 52 hours covering 5500 to 6000 miles from Le Bourget, landed near Tsitsihar September 29, and were held briefly by Chinese soldiers who mistook them for Russians.
Offshore near Floroe the coasting steamer Haakl on VII sank after a collision with the Norwegian steamer Ar risin Jaarl. Seventeen are believed drowned, nine or ten of them crew, the rest passengers. Salvage ships rush to the scene.

Robbers broke into Wingate North Carolina facilities including the state bank the post office and the Wingate College store but failed to obtain a large haul. The bank vault withstood entry though a hole was bored in the safe. Stamps small change watches fountain pens and cigarettes were taken from the post office and college store.

Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, flying over the Yucatan Peninsula, reports indications of a large unknown Maya city in Northern Peten. The expedition included Dr. Oliver Ricketson and Mrs. Lindbergh on a swift survey from Tikal through Uaxactun, with temple dating to Christ or earlier.
Justice investigators uncover evidence that two men were in Virginia McPhersons apartment the night she died. Robert A McPherson Jr faces a charge of strangling her after an alleged altercation with a longtime friend and another man.
Three gangsters were captured in the apartment of Brooklyn recluse Robert Joseph Burns after torturing him to reveal hidden money and valuables. Burns, near Poplar street police station, fought back as the gang, including two alleged White Hand Gang members, demanded the location of wealth. Police arrived after the struggle, Burns received medical treatment, and captives Thomas Thornton, Joseph Kenny, and James Riley were identified.
