Cross Infections Rise in Hospitals Warns Experts
Conservative estimates place hospital infections at 2 to 5 percent of admissions. An American Hospital Association report cites 2 percent of 30 million yearly admissions, raising costs by about 48 million dollars and extending stays by a day. Data on deaths vary, with figures up to 100,000 annually. Hand washing and basic cleanliness are stressed as the main preventives. Urinary tract infections are the largest group, with overuse and mishandling of urinary catheters a concern.
