A fire swept through Florence’s business district burning the F. W. Woolwards and Zeigler Drug stores and causing extensive damage estimated in the thousands. Firefighters reported the blaze largely under control by 11 am after hours of effort, with other buildings at risk.
Howard Keenan was killed in a Fulton area fight in Cherokee county last night. Police held Bally Cromer for inquest jury as investigations begin.
Governor Ehringhaus indicated a parole decision for Wallace Burkhead Davis, former Asheville banker, could come late this month. He met with Don Elias of Asheville Citizen-Times, Davis' attorney R. R. Williams, and local citizens seeking his release. Davis was convicted in 1931 of bank law violations and sentenced to five to seven years.
RALEIGH, Oct. 6. State Commissioner of Banks Gurney P. Hood announced the liquidation of Peoples Bank and Trust Company at Bonlee. Depositors received 11,158.84 dollars, about 2.7 percent of their funds. The bank closed in 1931 with assets of 52,631.48 dollars, but 13,475.03 was realized, a 74 percent loss. Preferred claims 206.53, accounts payable 13.30, and bills payable 400 were paid in full. liquidation cost 865.18 dollars.
