Coal Men's Leader Is Friend of Lewis

In 1941, Harry Morgan Moses, head of the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, acts as full-time bargaining leader for 153,000,000 tons of soft coal while maintaining a personal friendship with John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers. Moses, a World War I veteran, rose from laborer to president of the Frick Coke Co. and seeks unity among operators to counter Lewis. Moses was born November 11 in Westville, Illinois, and the two leaders have a storied history of blunt bargaining and mutual respect.
