New York reporters note a buying rush ends the summer slump as set makers push 1950 models below 1949 prices. Prices drop from about 375 for 1948 tables to 275 for 1949 models and around 200 for 1950 sets, with 3 million sets in use by year end and 2 million more to sell in 1949.

Rutherfordton October 5 John Junior Wood 22 was given life in prison after a Rutherford county jury found him guilty of first degree burglary and rape. Judge J Will Press Jr imposed life terms on both counts with the defense offering no evidence. The case involves breaking into a widow's home July 27, assault with a pistol and tying the victim with a bedsheet before raping her daughter. Wood was jailed, then transferred to an Asheville facility following sentencing.
A Southern railway freight train derailed at Glenn nine miles west of Durham when it struck a caboose and two freight cars on the main line. Engineer R. L. Dean, 57, of Spencer, was pinned in the locomotive cab for about an hour and a half and suffered a broken leg and body cuts after being freed by welders. Fireman R. F. Holler, 32, of Claremont, sustained minor injuries. Tracks were to be cleared by today.
Rocky Mount Safety Transit seeks state approval to raise bus fares from seven to ten cents. Proposal would switch to three tokens for 25 cents from five for 30. A public hearing is set for November 3 at 10 a.m. in the commission hearing room.
Two railroads ask the State Utilities Commission to abandon passenger service in eastern North Carolina. Atlantic and East Carolina Railway seeks to end all passenger runs from Goldsboro to Morehead City due to losses. Atlantic Coast Line seeks to drop two of four trains between Rocky Mount and Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va and replace with another schedule. Public hearings set for December and November respectively in Raleigh.
Raleigh October 5. Governor Scott will have both labor and management represented in a session tomorrow aimed at settling the Hart Cotton Mills strike now five months old. Marcus Carter of Tarboro and Lewis Conn of Greensboro will attend, with authority to speak for their sides. The governor doubts Carter has full approval to decide actions.
