Ships and Planes Lag in September Production
Rear Admiral Howard L. Vickery reported U S shipyards built 160 merchant vessels in September four fewer than August and eight short of the month's goal. Aircraft output likely matched or fell below August's 7 612 planes due to model changes aimed at improving performance. Absenteeism affected shipbuilding though 1943's 19 000 000 dead weight ton target remains within reach with about 1 000 000 tons left.
