Washington AP selective service to order pre induction physicals for all 26 to 35 year olds who had deferments but are now classified 1-A or 1-A-0. About 50 000 potential draftees could be drawn this month amid a national recheck. Local boards to test remaining 41 780 with about half expected to pass.
Wild winds and rising seas from Hurricane Inez pounded the Florida coast from Palm Beach to the Keys. Eye passed south of Key Largo as the storm veered toward the Gulf, injuring residents, shutting power, and prompting mass evacuations and shelter setups.

Senate Republican Leader Everett M Dirksen warned the Vietnam war may need rapid escalation though he did not expect Johnson to use nuclear weapons. Eisenhower said he would not automatically preclude such action. About 3,900 employees at the Chevrolet factory in St. Louis walked out, stopping passenger car, truck and Corvette production and sending 3,000 Fisher Body workers home. Negotiations had dragged through the night but failed to resolve the UAW complaint that workers were overloaded with work.
DETROIT AP Five days after unveiling new cars Chrysler Corp began mass layoffs totaling over 38 000 across the country due to a stamping plant strike. The company warned it could idle nearly all 110 000 hourly workers by next week if the UAW strike ends at the Twinsburg Ohio stamping plant. Additional plant shutdowns hit Hamtramck Detroit Belvidere St Louis Windsor and Los Angeles with thousands sent home by shift ends and in two Newark Del assembly plants. Ford and GM unrelated walkouts also reported at Oakville Ontario and Livonia Michigan.
