New Kerr Dam Opens With Initial Power in Va

BUGGS ISLAND Virginia power has begun at the John H. Kerr Dam with a limited output, but full turbine generation is expected this fall. The 87 million dollar project will benefit the Roanoke River Basin across Virginia and North Carolina with power flood control soil conservation and recreation. Army Lt Gen Lewis A. Pick predicts the plant will attract industry and create jobs while contributing to national defense with an annual 410 million kilowatt hours. Cold wave to hit Monday with Canadian air mass

Building Permits Rise In Raleigh Area In August

Raleigh-North Carolina posted a total of 11 442 044 in August building permits up two million from the state Department of Labor total. Highlights include new residential 6 902 865 non residential 81 850 and additions alterations and repairs 1 657 329. Durham led the state with 2 401 855 followed by Charlotte 1 319 496 and Raleigh 1 120 195.

Raleigh Hickory Telephone Co Bonds Authorized

The State Utilities Commission approved Raleigh Hickory Telephone Co to issue one million dollars in bonds for construction and refinancing. Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. will buy the bonds at 4.25 percent interest, maturing September 30, 1977. The company serves Hickory Falls Hildebran and Valdese.

Final wish granted as Ward requests baptism in prison

Ben F Ward, 31, convicted of raping an 18 year old girl, remained jailed in Central Prison when he asked to be baptized. He was later immersed at Thanksgiving Baptist Church on Highway 42 with Wake Deputy Allen Holmes present, Ward saying he sought forgiveness for the sin of murder.

First student visits campus as Sellene tele marks 63rd year

Raleigh report notes North Carolina State College welcomed a first student to the Raleigh campus as Sellene tele celebrated its 63rd anniversary. W. W. J. Mathews, an 82 year old retired Goldsboro contractor, became the first man to register in the original 1872 class and one of the 19 members who graduated.
