Pollution Control Hearing Set For North Carolina Streams
A public hearing in Asheville on October 24 will discuss recommended water use standards for streams in the basin. The committee will classify waters and may require pollution control, covering the French Broad, Davidson, Pigeon, Swannanoa, Ivy, South Toe, North Toe, Cane and Nolichucky rivers and tributaries across Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Haywood, Madison, Avery, Yancey and Mitchell counties. The survey notes rapid population growth, urges pollution reduction, and highlights tourism protection needs for fishing and camping. It cites 30 significant pollution points equating to domestic sewage from about 1,069,280 people and lists dammed streams for excess waste including the French Broad and Pigeon rivers. Municipalities and industries should hire competent personnel to study waste disposal and treatment. The basin holds 18 public water supplies serving about 149,645 people using 20 million gallons daily, with a 1950 census population of 247,290 and Asheville accounting for about 21 percent.
