Duke University Medical Center surgeon Dr. Nicholas Georgiade has developed an artificial breast prosthesis for mastectomy patients and has received an $80,000 anonymous grant to fund clinical research. The prosthesis, covered with soft plastic and filled with sterile gel, aims to look and feel like a natural breast and can be placed four to five days after mastectomy, with staged options if the remaining breast is large.
