Combat Death Toll Hits Two-Year Low In Vietnam War

Saigon AP reports the weekly American combat deaths fell to 95, the lowest in two years, amid a three week lull. South Vietnamese casualties rose to 308 as enemy losses declined to 2,382. American wounded rose to 1,315. US commanders expect low activity with sporadic high points and continued heavy B52 raids along the Cambodia border. North Vietnamese assaults near the DMZ killed two Americans and wounded 29, with 18 enemy dead.

Reds Challenge Talks With Saigon Regime

Paris AP United States and Saigon urged Hanoi and the Viet Cong to negotiate directly with the Saigon government on South Vietnam s future. Ambassador Lam reiterated elections with Viet Cong participation and urged the Communists to recognize the Republic of Vietnam as the legitimate government. Lodge condemned the rebels for refusing meaningful talks with the elected government, stating observers would view it as inconsistent with negotiations.
