Former Golf Pro On Trial For Murder
John Teal, 39, former golf pro, faces a second degree murder trial in Edgecombe County for the March 22 death of Martin Leroy Gorham, 17. Teal testified he fired believing the approaching figure was his wife’s former husband Joe Whitehurst. He said he shot as darkness obscured whether the target was dark or light. Sheriff Tom Bardin testified Gorham and three companions had run out of gas. Gorham carried a rubber tubing and a gas can. The trial began with selection of an all white male jury.
