A Kernersville mill worker and mother of four died after being shot in the head. Her husband Sam Staples was jailed. a murder charge will be filed. An unnamed man was described as the cause of the argument.
Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov departed Idlewild Airport in New York for Moscow, expressing hopes for universal peace and Eisenhower’s recovery. He heads home to prepare for the October 27 Geneva Big Four foreign ministers meeting with the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union.
Governor Luther H. Hodges helped dedicate a new 100000 dollar terminal at Raleigh Durham Airport with four government bodies cooperating. About 400 guests attended as Hodges, Rep. Harold D. Cooley and Rep. Carl Durham spoke. A jet air show was canceled due to weather.

Jackson Mississippi October 1 two Negroes said to have seen a Chicago Negro boy with kidnappers were taken out of state for safekeeping by other Negroes. The two identified were Leroy Collins and Henry Lee Loggin both reported missing by Randolph AF Brotherhood of Railroad Sleeping Car Porters. The FBI was asked to investigate.

Army Engineers using a towering crane rescued five firemen trapped on a rooftop as two abandoned factories in Winsted Connecticut caught fire. The blaze spread rapidly, collapsing the Carter & Hakes Building and threatening the Colt Co. structure. Firefighters battled for nearly two hours amid high winds and flood debris.
U S Senator W Kerr Scott publicly backs Senator Sam J Ervin to return to the Senate stating he is for the senior senator to continue His remarks came at a North Carolina Young Democratic Clubs breakfast in Durham He praised Ervin as able to work with and doing a good job with a possible opponent mentioned Monroe Redden of Hendersonville a former congressman Scott cautioned he would campaign if Ervin faced a primary challenge
In Belgrade on Oct 1 Yugoslavia and the United States announced they have settled differences of opinion and reached a clearer understanding of objectives after five days of talks with U S Deputy Undersecretary Murphy and President Tito. The communique praised frank discussion and cordial atmosphere.
