A group of prominent Baptists in Raleigh issued a Declaration of Conscience urging Baptists and all citizens to accept both presidential candidates' assurances to resist church pressure in official duties. They warned against denominational meddling that could create bitterness and disunity and harm spiritual unity and progress.
Two Army generals and four other persons died when a small Army transport plane crashed in fog over a residential area near Oakland California. Maj. Gen. Carl F. Fritzsche 57 of Bedford Ohio commanding general of the Army train was among the dead. The single engine Otter hit a hill near Orinda about 20 miles east of Oakland. Local witnesses described hearing an engine and then a crash.
The Lutheran Church begins a Sunday preaching mission for the deaf at Ebenezer Church Chapel Greensboro located at Walker Avenue and South Tremont Drive. Services at 11 a.m. Sundays except the second Sunday. Oct 16 at 7 p.m. A movie for the deaf is planned Oct 22. Senator John F. Kennedy returns to the campaign trail after rest at Hyannis Port. He flies to Chicago then Minneapolis for a bean feed, resumes Sunday in St. Paul Duluth and Hibbing, then on to St. Louis. Kennedy and wife Jacqueline tour in New York and Upper New York preceding December baby due. His staff counters Nixon’s charge of a monumental failure in the Democratic legislative push.
Chinese foreign minister Chen Yi urged the militia to defend homes as he declared the Chinese people ready to liberate Formosa. A massive Peiping parade marked the 11th anniversary of the communist conquest with Mao Zedong and other leaders addressing the crowd.
An Eastern Air Lines jet with 14 passengers landed safely after clipping a light plane in flight over Orlando. The light craft crashed near a residential area. its pilot Pete Ayres, 25, was killed. The collision occurred when Ayres crossed in front of the Eastern flight.
