North Vietnamese forces fired on U.S. helicopters northeast of Saigon triggering a major American air and artillery retaliation. The campaign around Song Be, about 74 miles northeast of Saigon near the Cambodian border, left dozens of enemy casualties and reported bodies of hundreds. American scout helicopters and Air Cavalry units conducted bombing runs and ground fire battles, with several engagements resulting in multiple enemy deaths and ongoing combat in the area.
At Houston Space Center Apollo 12 astronauts Conrad Bean and Gordon arrived at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory and began a 11 day quarantine. A man armed with a pistol and knife hijacked a Varig Boeing 707 en route from Europe to Cuba. The aircraft halted for refueling in San Juan before reaching Havana where communications were cut off. Among the 80 passengers were Emerson Fittipaldi and Dr. Peter Axleander. The hijacker, described as French of Algerian descent, ordered the flight to Cuba after stops in London and Paris.
In Saigon, a military tribunal sentenced four to life for spying in the province’s largest espionage case. Huynh Van Trang and Le Huu Thuy, both linked to Thieu's administration, plus Vu Ngoc Nha and Nguyen Van Kinh faced life terms. Others received 20 years to suspended sentences. 13 of the 31 others were women.
