Three youths held after string of armed robberies
Three unidentified youths were arrested near Asheboro after a State Highway Patrol roadblock stopped their vehicle. Investigators link them to three robberies this morning at Kernersville grocery, an Esso station on Route 109 near Thomasville, and James Service Station. Reports say the suspects fit descriptions provided by victims and robbed sites, including about $30 at the Kernersville store.

Aerialists Descend After 81 000 Foot Venus Flight
Aerialists Malcolm Ross and Charles B Moore rode in an instrument filled gondola under a large plastic balloon to 81000 feet from Rapid City South Dakota. They photographed Venus and reported wonderful views as sunset and sunrise colored the sky. They landed near Manhattan Kansas after a 28 hour trip, Ross was shaken but not hurt and Moore unharmed. Ground crews traced the balloon and returned instruments to Winzen Research Minneapolis.

In Greenville South Carolina three young Downs children J T Downs age 4 Lula Downs age 3 and Mickey Downs eight months died in a fire that destroyed their four room frame home. The blaze began between 7 30 and 8 a m while father T J Downs worked at a dairy farm and mother Aileen Downs had left to borrow a pot. Neighbors alerted emergency crews and Sheriff J R Martin with coroner George W McCoy investigated. Fire officials theorized the wood heater started the blaze.
