City Hosts Biggest Yule Parade In High Point

The 1958 High Point Christmas Parade drew an estimated 80 000 spectators making it the largest crowd for the event. The parade aired live on WSJS TV with WFMY set to show a film later. Floats included Queen City Trailways in Charlotte and a 1904 Oldsmobile antie auto ride led by Farley. Beauty queens and bands from multiple schools joined the festive procession along Main Street from Parkway to Russell Street.

Waldeck freighter limps into Halifax after Atlantic gale

The German 2968 ton Waldeck with 26 crew rode out a Friday night gale tilting to starboard with 20-foot waves. Two Canadian frigates reached the distressed vessel 30 miles south, then returned as winds eased and seas calmed.

Miss America Leads 40,000 at Piedmont Festival Parade

More than 40,000 people watched the annual Piedmont Festival parade in Thomasville. The 128-unit procession featured Mayor Kermit Cloniger Senator Everett Jordan Miss America Miss North Carolina Miss Thomasville and Miss Queen Piedmont Jerri Martin of High Point. The event was late starting by about 30 minutes due to rain earlier and featured a calliope Santa Claus is Coming to Town a color guard and the 18th Airborne Band among units. About 70 antique cars sponsored by the North Carolina Horseless Carriage Club also participated.

Khrushchev Signals Peaceful Berlin Bid Ahead of Summit

In Moscow Khrushchev voiced a peaceful Berlin solution and hinted at a six month negotiating window to remove Western garrisons from West Berlin and declare it a free city under UN observation. Remorseless Kansas Youth Slays Family for Farm and Money

Lowell Lee Andrews, an 18-year-old University of Kansas student, confessed to killing his father William 50 his mother Opal 41 and sister Jennie 20 at the family farm two miles northwest of Kansas City. He planned a robbery to inherit the 250 acre farm and $1800 savings, saying he wanted a sports car and a million dollars. The murders occurred after a Thanksgiving visit. Andrews later described the killings to detectives after initial denial and a minister's counseling.

Justice Frankfurter Recovers After Seizure
