High Point Men Among First Inductees Under New Draft Act
Twenty four men from Guilford and nearby counties, including Harrell W. Miller of 121 Fowler street and John Alvin Deaton of 425 Tomlinson street, were sworn in for 21 months active duty at Fort Jackson as part of the first inductees under the new draft program. Inductees will train as recruits, then become privates, with 33 months required active service to avoid reserve status. Additional draftees from Chatham, Rowan, Yadkin, Caswell, and Iredell counties were expected to join, joining a broad list of inductees from Asheboro to Mt. Airy and Winston-Salem.
