Grave North Carolina Artist Revived by Family Tale
The article recalls Dr J D Graves born 1819 in Caswell County who pursued art and music in France and England before becoming a Moore County physician. After storms at sea and a failed war service bid, he settled in North Carolina, raised six sons, and etched two surviving works about chimney sweeps. His son T S Graves of Greensboro donated books and prints to UNC, hoping to inspire NC students with his father’s life of service and contentment.
