Peru's Fishing Upwellings Linked to 1972 Collapse Corrected
Duke University oceanographers say the Peru anchovy crash of 1972 was caused by coastal upwelling and its variability. They explain how winds, currents and shelf shape drive near shore nutrient upwelling and fish blooms, noting disruptions can reduce stocks for 6 to 18 months. Barber led voyages off Mauretania and Peru to study these processes.
