Reinstatement of Jehovah’s Witness objectors to flag salute

President Roosevelt’s Fair Employment Practice Committee ordered the reinstatement of seven Jehovah’s Witnesses at the Pittsburgh Plate Glass plant in Clarksburg West Virginia who were fired last December for refusing to participate in a flag raising. The committee said no employee may be discharged for religious beliefs and required the unions Glass Ceramic and Silica Workers CIO and Window Glass Cutters League AFL to maintain effective control over any members who might threaten the reinstated men. The company admitted the seven were satisfactory workers but claimed union warnings could lead to actions by others. The action follows similar local cases and concerns over wartime bonds and antiwar sentiment.
