A high Point community school near Covington Georgia was destroyed by a fire that killed two and left eighty eight injured among ninety nine students. An overheated stove sparked the blaze and the building condemned long ago. Fifteen escapees were seriously burned as rescuers recovered two bodies.
Covington Georgia November 29 searchers comb debris of the burned High Point community school house for 12 missing children after a fire yesterday that destroyed the frame building. three children died and 15 were seriously injured along with one teacher. overheated stove blamed. building condemned over a year ago and delay in new construction due to patron friction.
The High Point chamber of commerce directors passed a resolution urging immediate steps to establish a Y M C A in the city. A committee led by Fred N. Tate and W E Snow will coordinate with churches and other groups to develop the project following prior discussions in October about the civic movement.
Six members of High Point public schools travel to Raleigh for the North Carolina Teachers assembly which runs today through Friday. Hundreds of teachers from across the state are expected to attend. Henry Van Dyke and other prominent speakers are listed. the group includes W. M. Marr L. R. Johnston Miss Annie Albright Miss Eva Bullock Mrs. Lillian L. Hayman and Henry Artau.
In Greensboro on November 29 Mrs. Mabel Moran aged 30 was killed instantly after being struck by Southern passenger train No. 21 at a grade crossing. Dr. John Gold, a local dentist, was seriously if not fatally injured.

At a Sheraton hotel meeting, High Point and Greensboro Boy Scout councils moved to form a county wide central council. Committees will pick a 60 to 75 member council, an executive board, a president, and chairs for extensions and finances. A county scout executive and car are planned to boost rural interest and rebuild local troops.
On November 29 Captain George Cathey, a Confederate veteran at the Soldiers' Home in Raleigh, celebrated his 101st birthday. He remains able to hear and read the Bible well, and last year received a 100-candle cake from comrades and home officials. He will be honored again this year.
In Moscow the third International open session debated the Negro question. President Korniloff proposed detailed reports to clarify the issue for European members. A delegate urged a Moscow congress of global Negro organizations to unite workers against capital. He called U S political ranks “Scraps of paper” and accused capitalists of sowing anti worker propaganda among Negroes.
In an adjourned session the council extended sewerage to Sunset park and Emerywood, laid out Kivett street from Kivett road to East Washington, and ordered paving College street from Washington to English. Petitions seek full paving to connect the heart of the city with the Kivett road. pumping station relocation to serve new lands.
Eyres Monsell, financial secretary of the admiralty, told the house of commons that Britain will scrap no additional warships under the Washington disarmament treaty unless other nations have acted and scrapped their quotas. The statement came in London on November 29.
High Point readers learn of Harry Palmer, noted pen sketch artist of the New York World, after he graduated High Point High School in 1905. He began Trinity College in 1905, spent two years there, then joined the University of North Carolina in 1908 for a two year medical course before further study at Jefferson.
Mayor Walker and the Asheville chamber back moving the Asheville Monroe football game from Salisbury to Charlotte due to easier access for Monroe residents. Asheville principal A J Hutchins says the plan will not be considered as arrangements are complete and Charlotte writers have shown a negative attitude toward the Asheville team.
A morning blaze in Raleigh destroyed the Dillon Supply company store room and supply shops near Union Station. Loss estimated at about 50000 dollars, with insurance coverage cited. Origin of the fire undetermined.
Ben Birchfield 41 to be brought from Blountsville jail for murder hearing in Bristol on five charred bodies found with a house fire. Slain were James W. Smith his wife their two year old daughter and the wife’s son. Police say the five were beaten with an axe and the fire hid the crime. Birchfield appeared calm after viewing the bodies. He allegedly threatened his wife after she sought a divorce.
Thursday at 10 o'clock Emmanuel Lutheran church hosts a special Thanksgiving service with a sermon on the subject Giving Thanks by the pastor.
Governor Cameron Morrison proclaims November 30 1922 a day of Thanksgiving in North Carolina. He calls on residents to suspend business, attend worship, and thank God for blessings, prosperity, and unity amid recent crises. Public prayers for civil leaders and guidance are requested. Chapel Hill reports NC football, all 25 players natives of North Carolina, in fine form for tomorrow’s 26th annual game at Charlottesville against Virginia. The Tar Heels, undefeated in southern play, are seen as strong favorites with a veteran lineup from last year.
Donald C. MacRae was elected commander of Andrew Jackson Post No. 87 in High Point succeeding Dr I Thurman Mann who declined re election. Randall Mann as vice commander Bruce Carraway as adjutant and other officers were elected amid an oyster supper and speeches at the First Presbyterian Hut.
The University of Virginia football team held light signals practice as Coaches Campbell and Abel evaluate backfield starters for the Carolina clash. Mappis remains injured while Arnold Walp and Wilson are expected in the backfield as Virginia aims to avenge last year’s 7 to 3 defeat in the 26th meeting with North Carolina.
High Point Athletic Club football season ends after negotiations to play Trinity College second string fail. A proposed Winston-Salem independent match failed as Winston’s manager balked at signing. Fans plan radio broadcasts for tomorrow’s games.
Arrangements were completed for a Thursday sunrise prayer service at the Friends church to begin at 7 o'clock with the City Christian Endeavor union. Miss Clara Cox will lead the devotional. Hot rolls and coffee will be served and about 25 baskets will be distributed to the city's poor after the service.
The First Presbyterian church conducts a Thanksgiving service tonight at 7 30 in the church hut. Rev C P Coble will lead the service and a special offering will be taken for the Barnum Springs orphanage. Special music will be featured.
