Five-robber raid on the First National Bank of Mooresville around 11 AM netted estimates of 3000 to 4000 dollars. The bandits forced customers and staff to lie on the floor and fled in a green old V-8 toward Charlotte. Police launched a dragnet as they investigated the theft and counted the loot.
Two masked men abducted three Mobile society girls on a downtown street and forced them to drive toward Jackson Alabama about 65 miles away. The girls Miss Virginia Whiting Miss Loraine Walsh and Miss Janet Powers were later released near a toll bridge over the Tombigbee river. Authorities in Mobile and Jackson counties searched for the girls and the car and the bandits.
Baby Face Nelson, once the nation's top criminal, was found dead in Niles Center Illinois after a gun battle with Inspector Samuel P. Cowley and Special Agent Herman E. Hollis near Barrington. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was killed as federal agents closed in after a 24 hour search. rewards totaling 7500 remained unclaimed.
