Air Force Jets Race Toward Transcontinental Speed Records

A team of Air Force pilots flew two McDonnell RF101 planes toward New York to reclaim Navy speed records. The launches from Ontario International Airport featured Capt. Ray W. Schrecengost Jr. and Capt. Robert Kilpatrick with further planes set to land at Maguire AFB after a Floyd Bennett Field leg. Standby pilots were Capt. Donald D. Hawkins and Capt. Robert Burkhart, with refueling by Boeing planned for the mission.
