Helicopter Rescues 21 From Ship Off Cape North

A Canadian navy helicopter rescued 21 crew members from the freighter Kismet after it was driven against rocks by high seas and winds near Cape North on Cape Breton Island. Lt Cmdr John Beeman piloted the craft to within 25 feet of the cliff, delivering the men to safety at Cape St. Lawrence where all were reported in good condition. Shore teams watched through the night ready to string life lines for a sea or cliff rescue if needed. The Berhamian stood by as seas eased but the helicopter completed its mission at 9:45 a.m. The Greek captain Anse Maniatis, 59, had previously weathered a wreck off the English coast three decades earlier.
