High Point City Operated Power Plant In 1890s 1900s
Local magistrate C C Muse recalls High Point’s early electric history. The city built a power plant in 1892 turning on the first street lights in February 1892 and expanded generation to meet growing demand. By 1901 Oscar N Richardson’s franchise built a nearby plant, later sold to North Carolina Public Service Company in 1909. The city moved to Duke Power-style supply in 1910 while Muse describes life as superintendent and sole lineman with one helper padding the wires and lights.
