Living Costs Jump in October as Inflation Persists
Washington AP October living costs rose six tenths of a percent the sharpest since mid year dimming White House hopes inflation is easing. Average weekly pay for about 45 million workers fell 33 cents to 121.03 as weekly hours dropped. Food costs fell three tenths of a percent while transportation surged 1.9 percent and clothing rose, with car and gasoline prices driving the trend.

Six year old shot after being mistaken for deer in Idaho

Preliminary Census figures from the Carolina Population Center show North Carolina's population rose 8.9 percent in the 1960s, totaling about 4.96 million in 1970 with undercount estimates pushing the true 1970 figure higher. The state’s metropolitan areas gained 21.2 percent, housing grew faster than population, and nonmetro growth was 2.6 percent.

Chemical May Diagnose Leukemia
A National Cancer Institute team reports a chemical enzyme in lymphocytes that may allow early leukemia diagnosis and future treatment. Found by Drs. Robert C. Gallo Sue Yang and Robert C. Ting, the enzyme activates dormant leukemia viruses to turn cells cancerous, present only in patients with lymphocytic leukemia. Further tests are planned.
