Cactus Jack Garner Celebrates 91st Birthday in Uvalde
In Uvalde Texas former Vice President John Nance Garner marked his 91st birthday with a large cake and a private party hosted by old friends A solemn moment came when his son Tully Garner gave him a portrait of Mrs Garner his late chief aide and adviser. Garner recalled his political life and joked about his wife. He spoke of living to 92 to balance his public and private years. He has spent 46 years in public service and later joined a family gathering with great grandsons John Garner Currie and Tully Robert Currie. The cake replicated his log cabin birthplace in Red River County. He noted the log house did him more good in politics than his speeches. He spends his days selecting pecan meats for gifts feeding bantam chickens reading and watching television.

May Extend Ban Tied to Geneva Talks and Inspections
McCone said the United States is bound by the resolution to refrain from atomic tests during Geneva talks but warned the talks must reach a make or break point early next year. He indicated if a test ban with inspections fails the US would press for break off and resumption of testing before the Khrushchev summit. State Department officials privately echoed this line citing military security risks in prolonging a ban without Soviet approval. The timeline cites mid April as a possible reference point with Eisenhower’s trip to the Soviet Union to affect the Geneva talks before mid 1960.
