Prize offered for best original anthem by Diocese of North Carolina
The Commission on Church Music of the Diocese of North Carolina offers a $50 prize for the best original liturgical anthem submitted by February 1, 1958. Open to Episcopal communicants in the state and to those serving musically. Manuscripts must be inked on standard paper, numbered, and enclosed in envelopes: composer name on envelope only. Winning piece may be performed at the Church Music Conference in June and possibly published.

Vast California wildfire rages in San Gabriel Mountains
A wind driven brush and timber fire near Deer Flat Camp in the San Gabriel range has burned about 25 thousand acres over three days and caused 25 million dollars in damage. About 1,400 firefighters including Indian hot shots from Winslow and Gallup fought the blaze along a 50 mile front with no homes threatened and no injuries reported.

Chicago police said baby photographer Robert Stacey admitted bludgeoning 16 year old expectant mother Darlene Todd with a sawed off bat and fatally stabbing her eight times. Stacey, 24, a married father of two, said he took photos of Todd’s six month old daughter before the attack and left the scene during a morning appointment. Todd’s body was found with seven chest wounds and a head wound. Stacy claimed the bat was a prop for his equipment.
