Official Navy and Allied Headquarters reports detail Japanese and American sea losses across all categories since December 7, 1941, compiling wartime casualties and ship totals from Far Eastern battle zones.
Allied weekend raids across Burma to the Yangtze basin culminated with American air power sinking a large Japanese transport or carrier at Haiphong in French Indo China. The action, part of a broad China theater operation, followed weeks of intensified Allied pressure against Japanese positions.
Allied and Australian airmen attacked Japanese forces in the Buna Gona area, sinking a destroyer and destroying 19 enemy planes while strafing ground troops. Ground forces secured a new Buna landing strip as Japanese planes were repelled.
The British Eighth Army drove back Rommel’s retreating forces in the Agedabia region forcing a withdrawal toward Agheila. Allied air power struck Tripoli and the Rommel base mole, with B 25s and Liberators pounding port facilities. The Senate defeated a cloture motion on a bill to abolish poll taxes for federal elections by a 37 to 1 vote. A British merchant vessel with a 48 crew was torpedoed and sank off the Northern Coast of South America in November. Forty-two crew members died, six survivors were rescued after seven hours in the water. The captain went down with the ship. Survivors landed at a Gulf Coast port in the United States. One survivor had endured Dunkirk evacuation and the London blitz. The ship had been at sea about eleven months and was en route home for Christmas.
A board of officers at Greenville Army Air Base is investigating a medium bomber crash three miles northeast of the base Saturday night that killed three crewmen. Lieut Charles T Humphreys 20 of Purdy Tennessee pilot Lieut Melvin R Quast 20 of Menno South Dakota co pilot and Staff Sergt Otis K Freyer Jr 19 of New Philadelphia Ohio engineer were killed. The bomber burned after the crash around 8 30 p m. All three were believed to have died instantly.
Film actor Errol Flynn was summoned into court for arraignment on statutory rape charges involving two 11 year old girls. The preliminary hearing heard the girls recount alleged assaults at a Bel Air party, though Flynn did not testify. Betty Hansen of Lincoln Nebraska testified about an intimate encounter during the party.
British First Army with American and French support launches a major attack on German Italian positions around Tunis and Bizerte. Rommel, possibly commanding forces, is said to have moved headquarters toward Tunisia as Allied forces press the Sicilian Straits defense. Prisoners reported and attacks described as growing in violence.
London dispatch says British bombers hit the Stuttgart industrial and communications center with good results after night raids. Ten bombers missing. Fighter commands struck northern France freight trains and fired on an Axis supply ship in the English Channel. Canadians helped, with Sgt. Robert Donald of Calgary describing "gorgeous fires" and incendiaries across the town.
Cairo reports a major Pan-American Airways port in equatorial Africa, a year after fevered beginnings.
