Toll feared to rise after Woodward mine disaster

Birmingham reports 84 dead and 60 injured from the No 3 coal mine explosion of the Woodward Iron company. Officials say 55 left for home. investigations continue with many unaccounted, including white workers, as crews search the wrecked mine.

Rescue efforts continue at Dotomite Mine No 3 disaster

Birmingham reports renewed removal of the dead from Dotomite Mine No 3 after an explosion trapped 475 workers. Officials estimate 83 dead and 60 injured with many fatalities tied to a derailment crash and a snapped electric cable that sparked the dust explosion. White workers predominated among the dead. black miners represent about 80 percent of the injured. Families watched through the night as crews and undertakers aided by helpers pressed to account for the missing.

W J Church of South Main street reports a tree in his yard yielded a second growth of pears this year. Some fruit was brought to The Enterprise office and the pears are nearly perfect. It is unusual for a tree to produce a second growth of fruit in this section.
