Two Italian Towns Taken By Eighth Army Advance

Allied headquarters say Gen. Montgomery’s Eighth Army pushed four miles in central Italy and captured San Pietro Avellana, moving toward Rome. German towns Alfedena and Castel di Sangro were abandoned as heavy rains and fighting continued.

War Today Admiral Nimitz Warns of Aggressive Pacific Push

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz declares the offensive against Japan is underway with bombers targeting Gilbert and Marshall islands and Marines plus army units landing on Makin and Tarawa Atolls. The objective is Truk, Japan’s major naval base, about 1500 miles west, signaling a likely massive naval engagement as the war narrows to a clash with the Mikado’s fleet.

Fourth War Loan Drive Set to Begin January Eighteen

Washington reports the fourth war loan drive will run from January 18 to February 15 with a $14.0 billion target. Civilians face a $5.5 billion quota while state committees are strengthened. Morgenthau says nonbank investors will be invited to participate. Bonds and certificates to be offered include series EB F G C notes and other 2 percent issues. Banks may invest time deposits in select bonds. The prior three drives raised over $50 billion.

Tax Expert Sets Nation's Tax Ceiling at 19 Billion

Yale economist Professor Fred R. Fairchild warned at the National Tax conference that postwar debt could reach 280 billion dollars and that 19 billion annually is the minimum and maximum the nation can bear. He urged a balanced budget and high taxes to prevent inflation and deficit finance.

4 000 000 Cases Whisky To Be Released

New York report says 4 000 000 cases of whisky may be released to ease shortages in monopoly states. National Distillers Products Corp with 14 associates signs an asset purchase deal with Allied Mills owner Century Distilling Co. Pending Allied stockholders approval, Seton Porter notes bottling will start to speed up distribution. Plan covers about 4 million cases of whisky.

Army troops seek service ribbons for length of overseas stay

Leaves From War Correspondent's Notebook reports Allied soldiers in the Mediterranean want a new insignia to show how long they have served overseas. Currently foreign theater ribbons exist but do not indicate time away from home. A captain notes many troops have been away about two years and seek a decoration to prove extended service.

Nazi Attacks Repelled By Red Armies

Moscow reports Soviet counteroffensives across the Dnieper bend place German positions near Krivoi Rog under pressure. In the Korostyshev area west of Kiev heavy German losses are cited after multiple tank and infantry assaults. Red forces also advance near Dnepropetrovsk and along the White Russian front toward the pre war border.

Search Continued For Survivors Of Tanker Collision

Coast guard craft pressed on today to find survivors after two tankers collided in dense fog 58 miles off Cape Henlopen. The incident left an undetermined number of sailors dead or injured. 39 survivors have been landed at Lewes. The disabled ship was towed and the other vessel, damaged, reached an Atlantic port under its own power. Navy officials declined to discuss causes. Red Cross aided rescued seamen wearing life jackets in scant clothing. The collision occurred at 2 a.m. CEWT yesterday.

Airmen pound Gasmata base in heaviest raid yet

Allied bombers hit the Japanese gasmata base on New Britain with 138 tons of bombs Saturday morning. Smoke blanketed the coast as operations concluded without interception. In New Guinea and Bougainville, tanks and ground actions pushed back Japanese forces amid retreating enemy positions.

New Battle Looming For Changsha

Changsha faced a potential new major battle as Japanese spearheads pressed on Changteh and Ry Yochow base near Tungting lake. Warships Support American Invasion Of Gilbert Islands

The Associated Press reports American forces launched an invasion of Makin and Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. Marines and soldiers established beachheads under naval and air bombardment, meeting strong but not overwhelming resistance. Two Sudden Deaths Delay Subsidy Vote
