Synthetic Lumber From Cornstalks Conserves Iowa Forests
Iowa scientists at Iowa State College and three U.S. firms have developed Maizolith synthetic lumber made from farm wastes such as cornstalks and oat hulls. The process creates knotless, grainless boards in vast sizes, potentially replacing traditional timber and expanding demand for the product to conserve forests. The research lead is Dr. O R Sweeney, head of the chemical engineering department, with the work aimed at lowering costs and boosting adoption.
