Secret Service stretched thin by many presidential candidates
The Secret Service says it is over-extended due to a large field of candidates, with 12 announced and six being guarded as Reagan and Ford receive protection. A 20-year-old Pompano Beach man, Michael Lance Carvin, fought with agents after a toy pistol attack on Reagan near Miami.

Salisbury earns national historic district designation
SALISBURY AP A central business district and an adjoining 19th century residential area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district covers 15 complete blocks and parts of 18 others, making it one of North Carolina's largest districts. Previously only about eight buildings in Salisbury Rowan County had such designation. Other NC districts include Wilmington Halifax Hillsborough Murfreesboro New Bern Fayetteville. Old Salem in Winston-Salem is on the national trust list.

Charge Against Woman Reduced in Contract Slaying Case
Edith Philyaw’s murder charge was cut to accessory before the fact of murder in the May 7 Collettsville ambush that killed Herman Lee Philyaw. Prosecutors say she procured three coconspirators. two pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and testified that she proposed harming her husband. One co-defendant’s trial was delayed pending appeal. Burns testified he fell in love with Philyaw and she asked him to kill her husband.
