Gov Hodges praised his industry hunting trip to Philadelphia calling it fantastic and unusually fruitful. He said he found rich ore and many industrial contacts eager to move quickly, more than on his prior trips to New York and Chicago in the past year.
A Nebraska jury found Caril Ann Fugate guilty of first degree murder in the Starkweather case and sentenced her to life imprisonment. Starkweather, 19, received a death sentence in May for the same killings.
Former Giants star Mel Ott, 49, remained in critical condition after eight hours of kidney surgery following a two car crash last week. Doctors cautioned survival was very uncertain though Ott’s constitution and prior fitness were noted as aiding his fight.
The Philadelphia Electric Co and 50 plus private utilities offered a 24.4 million dollar nuclear plant near Philadelphia. A gas cooled prototype would cost 24.4 million, be finished by 1962 or 1963, and initially feed 30 000 kilowatts then 40 000. The project is led by High Temperature Reactor Development Associates Inc with site to be announced. It awaits AEC approval and a further 14 million for R D.
Government economists report the nations economic recovery lagged behind expectations for July through September. GNP rose to 439 billion dollars at an annual rate, a billion below prior estimates but up 10 billion from the second quarter and over 13 billion from the recession era first quarter of 1958.
Senate Rackets Committee signaled possible investigation into alleged efforts to influence Hoffa jury. Witness John Bridge admitted a letter suggesting favorable results for Hoffa, while denying any payoff or bribery attempts. The panel noted interest in payments rumored to Hoffa and named truck line operators as figures to be再 questioned.
Berlin officials said East Germany agreed to guarantee West Berlin civilian traffic freedom in and out of the city. The accord, linked to a 1959 trade deal, does not resolve control of Allied supply routes, and Western officials view it as a relief in tension while trade and coal swaps loom.

About 7,000 workers were called out with 19,000 total employees facing potential furloughs. maintenance crews at major bases kept operations limited past the strike deadline while flight disruptions spread.
Piedmont Natural Gas Co adopted a seven million dollar construction budget for 1959 and declared quarterly stock dividends. Preferred stock holders will receive $1.37 a share and common stock holders 25 cents a share. The company operates in North and South Carolina.
Freeman F. Gosden, the original Amos of Amos n Andy, was named a special U S ambassador by President Eisenhower. Gosden will be part of a 10 member delegation attending Don Adolfo Lopez Mateos inauguration in Mexico late November into December.
Washington AP says Russia has an even chance to beat the United States to an atomic powered aircraft before year end. Pentagon line holds the U S on the threshold of success with an atomic plane but warns the Russians could use a crude design if first. Major General Donald J Keirn says the Air Force aims for a plane designed for atomic power with nearly unlimited range at supersonic speed and will soon begin flight testing.
Berlin reports Willy Brandt, 44, vows strong nerves and readiness to face Communists. A Socialist veteran of exile and wartime service, Brandt argues experience with Nazis and Communists shapes restraint on state power while guiding West Berlin through Cold War tensions.
