Trappists Adapt Life At Our Lady Of Guadalupe Abbey

Economic needs and church reform push the Trappist monks of Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in Oregon to shift from farming to light industry. They plant Douglas firs for Christmas trees and timber, build church furniture, and run a book bindery. Monastic membership has fallen from about 55 to 35 as new interest returns, with a selective process for applicants and a five year path to solemn vows. The day starts at 4 a.m. with extended services and grand silence from 8 p.m. to morning Mass.
