Sailors Train On High Bridge At Seamen’s Institute New York
In Manhattan the Seamen's Church Institute houses a 74 foot long replica of a ship bridge on its roof. The facility trains deck officers for merchant ships and Coast Guard or Navy service. The bridge allows plotting courses and sun shooting. The Seamen's Institute, since 1916, has long operated the Merchant Marine School. During World War II it trained navigators for U S ships and has since produced thousands of graduates with ongoing enrollment.
